These baffles, typically made from lightweight rigid foam, prevent fiberglass batts or blown cellulose insulation from blocking the soffet vents. Proper air flow through the attic will help to prolong the life of the roof as well as reduce heating and cooling costs for the homeowners.
Climb into the attic, and measure the width between two roof rafters or trusses to determine the size of the rigid foam attic vents you will need to purchase. Then count the number of spaces between rafters where the rafters meet the exterior wall to determine the quantity of attic vents you will need to buy. Slide the platform toward one side of the attic where the roof rafters intersect with the exterior walls.
Put on a pair of work gloves and a dust mask. Pull back the fiberglass or cellulose insulation from between the ceiling joists near the edge of the roofline, and clean out any insulation that may have fallen into the soffet.
Position a rigid foam attic vent between the rafters with the tabs on the edges of the vent flat against the roof decking. Slide the vent downward until it extends a few inches over the soffet. If your vent has a drop-down blocker that fits between the ceiling joists, align the drop-down blocker with the point where the exterior wall meets the roof.
