I only have restore discs for both XP and the new Vista otherwise i would do a clean install of xp then a clean install of Vista on top as this seems to be the best way but i dont think the restore discs will allow me this feature?

Dell does not use restore disc's, they only supply OS reinstallation discs, driver and applications disc's. If you do reinstall Vista on that Dell you will lose some custom applications that come preinstalled also. Here is an article on how to dual boot when Vista is already installed using EasyBCD, this article is about using the same partition, but I am sure it could be done on a 2 drive boot.
