A friend of mine recently experienced an infection with a rootkit which was successfully cleaned from the Windows 7 Pro system.

He then noticed a few days later that he could not use Windows Updates anymore, the function that can be opened from the Start Menu. A quick check of mine revealed that the service automatic updates was missing from the list of services. My guess is that the rootkit did remove that service or manipulated it somehow so that it is not listed there anymore, probably to prevent Microsoft from patching the operating system automatically.
